I like the person I have become. ..

30 Jul

As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend…

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 &70′s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love … I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face.
So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.  As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore…I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day(if I feel like it). ~Unknown

Hear The Music…Before the Song is Over.

25 Mar

The Giving LoopThere is very solid wisdom in this story, take it to heart and enjoy it…remember it.  And please, share it…

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it, don’t have it on their schedule, didn’t know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn’t suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word “refrigeration” mean nothing to you?

How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched ‘Jeopardy’ on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, “How about going to lunch in a half hour?” She would gas up and stammer, “I can’t. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain.” And my personal favorite: “It’s Monday.” She died a few years ago.

We never did have lunch together. Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches… We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!

We’ll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Stevie toilet-trained. We’ll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We’ll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of “I’m going to,” “I plan on,” and “Someday, when things are settled down a bit.”

When anyone calls my ‘seize the moment’ friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you’re ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.

My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It’s just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.

Now… go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to do… not something on your ‘SHOULD DO’ list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting?

Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask “How are you?” Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Ever told your child, “We’ll do it tomorrow.” And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say “Hi”?

When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift… Thrown away… Life is not a race. Take it slower. Hear the music before the song is over.

Tell A Woman!

14 Mar
Tell A Woman

Giving Loop Design for Tell A Woman.

Hope for Heather is at it again! They have developed a new campaign to help raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer called, “Tell A Woman.” We were honored to be asked to jump in the loop  to develop the design for this new cause campaign – and what fun we had! Below is the final design which will be used to promote Ovarian Cancer awareness .

Each year, approximately 20,000 American women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 15,000 women die of the disease. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are very vague; making it difficult to diagnose. Only 19% of ovarian cancers are caught before cancer has spread beyond the ovary to the pelvic region. When it is detected and treated early, the five-year survival rate is greater than 92%. Click~> for Ovarian Cancer Symptoms.

Hope for Heather is a not-for-profit corporation in memory of Heather Weeks, who lost her life to cancer at age 24. Heather was an advocate for women’s cancer and committed to raising funds to find a cure. Through your donation, Hope for Heather will continue Heather’s dream of educating all women on the major symptoms of Ovarian Cancer.

We are grateful that we are in a position to give back 20% to Hope for Heather on all their cause gear/promotions needs! If you, or someone you know,  are interested in ordering a “Tell A Woman” Tank or Tee, please contact the founder of Hope for Heather, Frieda Weeks for details. Also follow her on Twitter at @FriedaW.

Please share the positive mojo and spread the word and…TELL A WOMAN!

(NOTE: If your charity/non-profit is in need of cause gear/materials, please ring us at 716-250-2768, or, email info(at)thegivingloop.com – we would love to help you.)

46 Mommas Shave for the Brave

28 Feb

46 Mommas46 kids are diagnosed with cancer each weekday in the US. Let me say this again, FORTY-SIX KIDS are diagnosed with cancer EACH DAY. That is about the equivalent of two entire classrooms. Staggering… heartbreaking. But what is really unbelievable is how incredibly UNDERFUNDED childhood cancer research is. We want to tell you about some amazing ladies trying to change that. Maybe you’ve heard of these inspiring women, maybe you haven’t – but we think you should. Please read on…

Their team name – 46 Mommas. Who are they? They are a group of 46 moms of children who have fought or are fighting cancer. They give of their heart and soul, with the core goal of making a solid difference, to get the message out there that kids get cancer too. What better way to do that than to shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer? While the women on the team come from different parts of the country, different backgrounds, different occupations; there is one thing they all have in common, childhood cancer.

Please take a moment and check out the children they are honoring – the children they are Mommas to and reason for doing this: KIDS HONORED

Childhood Cancer Research Is Vastly Underfunded.

  • Funding for pediatric cancer clinical trials has gone down every year since 2003.
  • In 2006, the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) federal budget was $4.6 billion. Of that, breast cancer received 12%, prostate cancer received 7%, and all 12 major groups of pediatric cancers combined received less than 3%. And childhood cancer research only gets 2.96% of the money raised by the American Cancer Society.
  • In dollar terms, NCI’s funding for pediatric clinical trials is $26.4 million while funding for AIDS research is $254 million, and breast cancer is $584 million.
  • Pediatric cancer research is not only grossly under-funded by the government, it is also largely ignored by private drug companies. Pharmaceutical companies fund over 50 % of adult cancer research, but virtually nothing for kids.
  • Pharmaceutical companies don’t commit resources to childhood cancer research because the adult cancer drug business is viewed as more profitable and less risky to them.
  • Accordingly, there is an estimated $30 million a year gap in childhood cancer research funding. ~Stats via I Care I Cure Foundation

Please join us in helping spread the word about these incredible Mommas and help them hit their fundraising goal. No donation is too small (or too big). If you cannot donate, you can still make a solid difference and help by spreading the word about 46 Mommas via Twitter, Facebook, Blog, email – anyway you can. Take a few minutes, and do it for the kids.

Join them on Facebook and on TWITTER
